Chess Tips for Beginners

How Pieces Move

  • Pawns: Move forward 1 square (or 2 from starting position), capture diagonally
  • Knights: Move in an L-shape (2 squares one way, then 1 square perpendicular)
  • Bishops: Move diagonally any number of squares
  • Rooks: Move horizontally or vertically any number of squares
  • Queen: Combines bishop and rook movements
  • King: Moves one square in any direction

Basic Chess Tactics

  • Fork: One piece attacks two or more enemy pieces at once
  • Pin: A piece can't move because it would expose a more valuable piece
  • Check: When the king is under attack - you must address it immediately!
  • Checkmate: The king is in check and has no legal moves - game over!

Puzzle Solving Tips

  • Look for checks, captures, and threats first
  • Find pieces that are unprotected or poorly protected
  • Think about what your opponent might do after your move
  • Don't rush - take your time to find the best move!
